Ichiro Ozawa, the shrewd leader of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, has always derived his power from lurking in the shadows. On Wednesday he appeared to have toppled Shinzo Abe merely by refusing to meet his erstwhile nemesis.

日本の野党民主党の狡猾な代表である小沢一郎はいつも裏工作から自分の権力を引き出してきた。水曜日に彼は単に面会を断るだけで旧敵である安倍晋三を倒してしまったようだ。

That never occurred. But the question is what happens next. On Wednesday night Mr Ozawa continued to play his enigmatic game, saying it was up to the ruling Liberal Democratic party to elect a leader and determine when to dissolve the lower house and call a general election.

それ(小沢と安倍の会合)が実際に持たれることはなかった。しかし問題はその次に起こる事である。水曜日の夜、小沢氏は得たいの知れないゲームを続けた。与党自民党が総裁選を行い、そしていつ衆議院を解散し、総選挙を行うか決めるのは自民党に責任があると言ったのだ。

But analysts say it will not be straightforward vault into power for Mr Ozawa. An LDP defector who has spent the last 10 years plotting its downfall, Mr Ozawa ran a brilliant campaign in July’s upper house election.

しかし評論家は小沢氏はそう簡単に権力を握れないだろうと言っている。自民党の凋落のための陰謀に過去10年間費やしてきた自民党の脱党者である小沢氏は7月の参院選ですばらしい選挙運動を指揮した。

Many wonder too whether he could be a constructive leader, having spent much of his political career ruthlessly destroying others’ ambitions.

他人の野心を容赦なく破壊することに政治人生の大部分を費やしてきた小沢氏が建設的なリーダーになれるかどうかについても多くの人は疑問視している。
