Mr Ozawa is an unappealing but pivotal figure in Japanese politics. ... With a reputation for arrogance, stubbornness and backroom dealing, he earned the nickname “the Destroyer”, because of the damage he inflicted on his own side. Indeed, the DPJ sought to keep Mr Ozawa this week for fear he might otherwise lure some DPJ members into a new party that would ally with the LDP, and lose the party its control of the upper house.

小沢氏は魅力的ではないが日本の政治において極めて重要な人物である。傲慢であり、頑固であり、裏取引を好むという評判であり、味方に被害を負わせることから「壊し屋」と呼ばれるようになった。実際、今週民主党が小沢氏を引きとめようとしたのは、そうしなければ小沢氏は民主党の議員を何人か誘って、自民党と連立を組む新党を立ち上げるであろうと恐れたからであった。そうなれば民主党は参議院の主導権を失っただろう。
